How to Extend a Student Permit in Canada

If you are an international student in Canada with an expiring Study permit, there are a few ways to extend your stay in Canada.

What is a Student Permit?

A Student permit is a document that the government of Canada issues to foreign nationals who intend to study in Canada.

What is the Validity of a Student Permit?

The validity of a student permit tells you how long you can stay in Canada. The expiry date is usually found on the top right corner of the student permit and will be valid for the entire duration of your studies with an additional 90 days. The extra 90 days give you enough time to apply for another permit or prepare for your departure.

Who Can Apply for a Student Permit Extension?

International students with at least 30 days left before their student permit expires can apply to extend their stay in Canada. Extensions are granted to students whose studies will finish later than expected or if they would like to continue studying in Canada beyond the expiration of their student permit.

How Can I Extend my Student Permit?

 To apply for an extension on your student permit, you will need to be complete the application online.

Canada requires most applications to be submitted electronically including:

Applications for extensions of temporary resident status;

  • Applications for student and work permits;
  • Applications for renewal of student or work permits.

 Applications must be submitted at least 30 days before the student permit expires.

Additionally, international students must remain in Canada until a decision is made on their application.

Can I Apply to Extend my Student Permit if it has already Expired?

 If you fail to apply for an extension on your student permit before it expires, you will need to apply for a Restoration of Temporary Residence Status. This must be completed within 90 days after the student permit expires.
